The terms shrimp and prawn are common names, The Indian prawn, is one of the major commercial prawn species of the world. It is found in the Indo-West Pacific from eastern and south-eastern Africa, through India, Malaysia and Indonesia to southern China and northern Australia

India’s shrimp farming area is around 160,000 hectares. The highest farmed shrimp production in a year was 805,000 MT in 2019. The southeastern coastal state of Andhra Pradesh has been the anchor of aquaculture in India.

The shrimp sector in India has undergone a rapid transition from Penaeus monodon (black tiger shrimp) to Litopenaeus vannamei (whiteleg shrimp). The introduction of L. vannamei started at an experimental basis in 2009 with some small trials with two exporters that had their own farms.
