Each variety has a distinct taste, shape and colour. The production of mangoes in India is around 15.03 million tons, contributing to 40.48% of the total world production of mango. Mango export from India has been increased by Rs. 209 crores in 2010-2011 from Rs 142 crores in 2006-200707. The Indian mango export has thus grown by 47%. ALPHONSO

Alphonso is one of the most popular varieties of mangoes worldwide. Native to Maharashtra, this variety is now also grown in Gujarat and some parts of Karnataka.it is a seasonal fruit available from around mid-April to the end of June. These mangoes have a juicy, rich and creamy texture. They have a natural distinct aroma, flesh is saffron-colored and without a hint of fiber.

KESAR

The Kesar mango variety of mangoes are also called ‘Gir Kesar’ is a mango cultivar grown in the foothills of Girnar in Gujarat. This variety was first cultivated by the Nawabs of Junagarh in 1931 and was named Kesar in 1934. It is known for its bright orange colored pulp which resembles saffron, the spice it is named after and smells like it too which is its most distinguishing characteristic. It is generally sold to the market in April and its cultivation begins around October after the monsoon season. It is mostly grown in and around Ahmedabad and Gujarat

SINDHURA

This variant is sweet, and yet has a slight tanginess to it that has an aroma that lingers in your mouth for long. This is very good for preparing shakes, as the pulp has a good yellow colour. Distinct in appearance with red colour on outside with yellow sweet flesh.

TOTAPURI

Totapuri Mango variety is generally found in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. This variety of mangoes are usually large in size. Golden yellow in colour, these mangoes are oblong in shape. Mild in taste and greenish in colour, this variety of mango looks like a parrot’s beak.The skin of these mangoes is generally thick and the colour can vary from green to yellow.

BANGINAPALLI

Banginapalli is also known as safeda mangoes. Significantly larger than their Alphonso counterparts, this mango variety is produced in Banginapalli of Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh. With its pleasant aroma, they are oval in shape, with smooth skin and is around 14 cm in length. It has a oval shape with light yellowish colour.

PAIRI

This variety of mangoes is one of the best varieties of mangoes in Indi. Oval in shape Pairi mangoes generally weighs between 250 to 450 grams. The flesh of this variety is yellowish-orange to reddish tinge. The fruits are firm, high in fiber, juicy and have sweet and sour taste. It has a pronounced scent and excellent in quality.

NEELUM

The Neelum variety of Mangoes are especially known for their beautiful shape, unique taste and floral aroma. This variety of mangoes is generally grown in every part of the country, especially in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka And Tamil Nadu. They are usually found in abundance in June. With an orange skin, they are tiny in comparison to other varieties and extremely delicious.

LANGRA

This variety of mangoes is also known as Banarasi Langra. Langra is a mango cultivar majorly grown in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. This cultivar has a characteristic of retaining a greenish tinge while ripening and is oval shaped. This variety of mangoes is generally harvested during the last half of July and is available from July to August.

DASHEHARI

Dashehari,  also called Malihabadi is one of the most popular varieties of mango in the North of India. It is known for its exquisite taste and a pleasant aroma. It is said that 80% of varieties of mangos in North India is covered by ‘Dashehari’ and can be genetically traced back to this very plant. Lucknow, where it is mainly produced, the Dashehari mango variety was first cultivated in the garden of a Nawab in Lucknow about 200 years back. It is sweet with an exquisite taste and a strong aroma. It is fibre-less, and has a long, perfect shape. Bright yellow in colour. Apart from consuming raw, it is also used for making chutney and aam ras.

RAJAPURI

The fresh, soft in mouth feel and sweet flavour of Rajapuri is often compared to Alphonso and Kesar, which makes it most popular on table and cooking mango. Rajapuri is the largest varieties of mangoes found in India which means its ideal to share with family. They are an attractive combination of smooth and unblemished yellow, orange and red skin. Fruit size varies from 500g to 1kgs. With smooth and tender flesh, it has a similar shape to Kesar but a bit more rounded.

HIMSAGAR

The mango is medium-sized and usually weighs between 250 and 350 grams. Characterised by a sweet aroma, this variety is the specialty of West Bengal and Orissa. This medium-sized variety weighs between 250-350 grams and has creamy flesh which are good for making desserts and shakes.They are usually medium sized, greenish in colour on the outside and have a pulp which is yellow to orange in colour. This variety of mango does not have any fibre.

CHAUSA

Chausa’ mango, also known as the ‘Chaunsa generally golden-yellow in color. This variety was introduced by Sher Shah Suri during his reign in the sixteenth century. Named after a town in Bihar, It is almost fiberless with an incredibly sweet pulp and has an aromatic, pleasant and sweet flavour. It is characterised by its yellow-golden colour.

RASPURI

Largely grown Old Mysuru of Karnataka, this variety is known as the Queen of Mangoes in India. It arrives in the month of May and is available by the end of June. They are oval in shape and about 4 to 6 inches long.

BADAMI

Badami is Karnataka’s leading mango variety and is best consumed from April to July. Jam-packed with nutrients, this variety has a very thin skin and is popularly known as the Alphonso of Karnataka state. The skin of this variety has bright golden yellow with a tinge of red which spreads across the top of the fruit.
